Hoodie Elephant Blanket

I just finished up my newest design - Hoodie Elephant Blanket for one of my nephews who will be turning 4 in September.  He absolutely loves elephants.  So, I'm sure he's going to enjoy  having his very own elephant blanket.

I used Bernat Blanket Yarn for this project.  If you haven't tried this yarn yet, then you definitely need to.  It's super soft and bulky so it works up quickly.  I'm a big Amazon shopper and, at times, you can find great deals/sales on Blanket Yarn.  (If you buy on Amazon, please help me out by clicking on my Ad link on the side so I can continue designing and posting my patterns for FREE).

Measurement:  Approximately 51" long (from top of hood to bottom) x 33" wide

St:  stitch(es)
SC:  single crochet
HDC:  half double crochet
DC:  double crochet
MR:  magic ring
FO:  fasten off

Directions:
Blanket Portion:
1.  Ch66.  HDC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (65)
2-44.  1 HDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (65)

Hoodie Portion:
45.  Rotate blanket to work on the short end.  Work 1 HDC in each st evenly across.  There's 44 rows, so you should have 44 st.  Do not Ch1.  Turn.  (44)
46.  Sl st into first 7 st.  Then 1 HDC in each of the next 30 st.  Ch1 and turn.  (30)
47-60.  1 HDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (30)
*Note:  if you want your hoodie to be wider, then after row 45, just continue with making 44 HDC stitches per row up to row 60*

At the end of Row 60, FO and leave a long tail for shaping hood.  You will achieve this by folding the hoodie in half and whipstitch Row 60 - this will form the center portion of the hood.

Ears (make 2):
1.  With 10mm hook and white yarn, 10 DC into MR.  Pull to tighten, but do NOT join.  Ch1 and turn.  (10)
2.  2 DC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (20)
3.  2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next st.  Repeat across.  FO white yarn and join grey yarn.  Ch1 and turn.  (30)
4.  With white yarn, SC around the entire perimeter of the ear.  FO.  Leave a long tail for attaching.

Eyes (make 2):
1.  With 10mm hook and black yarn, 10 DC into MR.  Sl st to join.  FO.  Leave a long tail for attaching.

Pupils (make 2):
1.  With 8mm hook and white yarn, 3 SC into MR.  FO.  Leave a long enough tail to attach each pupil to the eye portion.

Tusks (make 2):
1.  With 10mm hook and white yarn, Ch8.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and next ch.  1 HDC in each of the next 3 ch.  1 DC in each of the last 2 ch.  FO.  Leave a long enough tail for attaching.

Trunk (make 2):
1.  With 10mm hook and grey yarn, Ch5.  HDC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (4)
2-10.  1 HDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (4)

For the trunk, I placed right sides together, whipstitch around.  Turn right side out before completely and lightly stuff with polyfil.  You just need a small amount of polyfil to help with trunk shaping.

Hair (make 3):
1.  Ch8.  FO and attach each end to the center top of head between ears.

To use as a pillow:
Fold sides of blanket inward.  Fold up in half.  Then fold sides in (like a paper airplane) so that it mirrors the hoodie portion.  Then place under the hoodie.

Assembly:
See pics above for placement of facial features and ears.

And, that's it!!!  Cute, simple, quick and functional blanket that kids will love.

Happy Crocheting!!!
