If you're looking for a quick and simple hat pattern, then this is the pattern for you. It works up quickly and makes for a very warm hat.
I used Bernat Softee Chunky yarn (#6) and a 10mm hook. This hat takes literally less than an hour from start to finish. It’s my go-to hat for my grandchildren as they continue to grow.
Size:
19" - 20" head circumference
15" - 16" head circumference (stop increase round at 30 HDC stitches and begin repeat rounds until desired length is achieved)
For an average adult head size, add 1 additional increase round before starting the repeat rounds, then continue until desired length is achieved.
For a large adult head size, add 2 additional increase rounds before starting the repeat rounds, then continue until desired length is achieved.
Materials:
—10mm hook
—Bernat Softee Chunky yarn (#6) in your color of choice
—tapestry needle for weaving
U.S. Stitch Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
Sl St: slip stitch
St: stitch(es)
HDC: half double crochet
HDC2tog: half double crochet 2 stitches together (creates a decrease)
Rep: repeat
MR: magic ring
FO: fasten off
Special Notes:
1. This hat is worked in the round so you will need to use a stitch marker to keep track of the first and last stitch; and move stitch marker up as you begin each new round.
2. If desired, you can slip stitch join the last stitch to the first stitch and then chain 1.
3. The Pompom is optional.
Directions:
1. 10 HDC into MR. (10)
2. 2 HDC in each st around. (20)

4. 2 HDC in first st, 1 HDC in next 2 st. Rep around. (40)
5. 1 HDC in each st around. (40)
6-10. Rep #5. At the end of Round 10, FO and weave ends.
Pompom:
1. I wrapped 20-25 times around 4 fingers. I then tied a double knot in center and trimmed.
2. Attach to center top.
Variation:
1-5. Use Soft Taupe yarn. Follow directions above.
6. Join Black yarn. *HDC spike stitch, then HDC in the next 4 st.* Rep from * to * around.
7-8. Join Soft Taupe, HDC around.
9-10. Join Black yarn, HDC in BLO (back loops only) around.
