Berry Hat & Cowl

While I was at the beach, I designed this "Berry Hat & Cowl."  I really love the color and texture of this set.  I used "I Love This Yarn," from Hobby Lobby.  It's super soft and so pretty.

I used the Raspberry Stitch to create the beautiful texture in this hat and cowl.  It's a very easy but effective stitch to use.  

I hope you all will enjoy this project as much as I did in designing it.  My granddaughter, Miss Arielle, as you can see in the pics, looks so pretty modeling it for me...

Berry Hat & Cowl Set
Size:
Hat:  20-22" head circumference
Cowl:  approximately 4" x 26"

Size Note:  if you would like to make this for a smaller child, then reduce the number of increase rounds (for example, at the end of Round 5, the diameter = 6") and then decrease the number of repeat rounds by 1 or 2 rounds.

Materials:
--6.0mm hook
--1 skein of Berry yarn in I Love This Yarn (or your color of choice)
--(4) 1" black buttons
--stitch marker
--tapestry needle for weaving

U.S. Stitch Abbreviations:
Ch:  chain
Sl st:  slip stitch
St:  stitch(es)
SC:  single crochet
DC:  double crochet
FPDC:  front post double crochet
BPDC:  back post double crochet
Sk:  skip
Rep:  repeat
MR:  magic ring
FO:  fasten off

Special Note:
1.  The hat is worked in the round (unless otherwise noted), so place your stitch marker in your first stitch of each round to keep track of each new round.
2.  If desired, you can slip stitch join the last stitch to the first stitch and chain 1.

Special Stitch:
1.  Raspberry Stitch:  SC, DC, SC in the same stitch.  Skip 2 stitches.  Repeat. 

Directions:
Hat:
1.  10 DC into MR.  (10)
2.  2 DC in each st around.  (20)
3.  2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next st.  Rep around.  (30)
4.  2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 2 st.  Rep around.  (40)
5.  2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 3 st.  Rep around.  (50)
6.  2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 4 st.  Rep around.  (60) 
7-15.  Raspberry stitch.  (see above)
16.  1 DC in each st around.  Sl st join to first st and Ch1.  (60)
17.  FPDC around the first post stitch, BPDC around the next post stitch.  Rep around.  (60)
18-21.  Rep #17.
22.  Loosely sl st in each st around.  FO and weave ends.

Pompom (optional):
1.  I made mine by wrapping the yarn around 4 of my fingers, 50-60 times.  Tied in a knot in the center.  Trimmed ends with my scissors and attached to the top center of the hat.


Cowl:
1.  Ch17.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (16)
2.  Raspberry stitch across.  SC in last st.  Ch1 and turn.  (16)
3-65.  Rep #2.
66.  *Ch3, sk 3.  SC in next st.*  Rep 3 more times to make a total of 4 loops.  SC in the last st.  
67.  SC in each st across.  Place 3 SC st in each loop.  FO and weave ends.  (16)

Buttons:
1.  Attach buttons at Round 1, across from each loop.  
The cowl can be made longer and wider, if so desired.  It is worked in multiples of 3 + 1.
