A Very Hungry Caterpillar Headband
I love the children’s book, “A Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. March 20 this year is the day we celebrate this book. So, I wanted to make something quick, cute and easy!!!!
Size:
This fits a 20-22” head circumference if the ends are whipstitched together; however if you use buttons then it becomes adjustable to fit smaller sizes.
Gauge:
8 SC x 6 rows = 2”x 2”
Materials:
—#4 worsted weight yarn; I used Mainstays yarn from Wal-Mart in red, green, yellow and purple
—4.0mm hook
—tapestry needle
—3 buttons (optional)
U.S. Stitch Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
St: stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SC: single crochet
HDC: half double crochet
Rep: repeat
FO: fasten off
MR: magic ring
Directions:
For the band:
1. Ch 76. SC 75. Ch1 and turn. (75)
2-8. SC 75. Ch1 and turn. At the end of Row 8, FO and leave a long tail. 75)
Now, you can add 3 buttons, vertically, on one end, to make this adjustable for different head sizes. If you opt to whip stitch the ends together, like I did, then the band is going to fit a 20-21” head circumference.
Inner Eyes (yellow):
Make two
1. 10 HDC into MR. Sl st join and Ch1. (10)
2. 2 HDC in each st around. Sl st join and Ch1. (20)
3. 2 HDC in first st, 1 HDC in next st. Repeat around. Sl st join and FO. Leave a long tail for attaching
Outer Eyes (green):
Make two
1. 10 HDC into MR. Sl st join and Ch1. (10)
2. 2 HDC in each st around. Sl st join and FO. Leave a long tail for attaching. (20)
Antennas (purple):
Make 2
1. MR. 6SC. Sl st join and Ch1. (6)
2. 6 SC. Sl st join and Ch1. (6)
3. 2 SC first st, 1 SC next st. Repeat around. Sl st join and Ch1. (9)
4-7. SC in each st around. Sl st join and Ch1. (6)
8. SC in each st around. FO and leave a long tail for attaching. (6)
See pics for placement of eyes and antennas.
And, that’s it for this super cute “A Very Hungry Caterpillar” Headband!!!
