My Lion Blanket/Pillow

Well, I'm finally setting aside time today and updating posts with patterns.  And, I think this one, My Lion Blanket/Pillow, is so super cute and cuddly.  In months past, this blanket has been posted with pics of My Puppy and My Polar Bear Blankets.

The Lion Blanket is made a little different.  I didn't use blanket yarn on this one, but decided to use double-stranded #4 Worsted Weight yarn to see how it would measure up with my other 2 blankets and to determine which yarn I liked best in making the animal blanket/pillows.

My Lion Blanket/Pillow Pattern

St: stitch(es)
Sk:  skip

3-50.  Repeat #2. (2 skeins held together will make approximately 42 rows)  FO at the end of row 50 and weave ends.

At the end of row 50, your piece should measure approximately 23" wide x 31" long.

 Hoodie portion:
Now, turn to one of the short sides to make the hood.  You will be holding 2 strands of the light taupe together (now if you want to use 1 skein and hold the ends together, then that's fine).
1.  Work 50 HDC st evenly across the short side.  Ch1 and turn.  (50)
2.  HDC dec, then 1 HDC st in the next 46 st, and HDC dec in the last 2 st.  Ch1 and turn.  (48)

Fold last row (18) in half and either, whipstitch or sl st together to form hoodie.  FO and weave ends.

19.  Now, join 2 strands of taupe yarn to the edge of the hoodie and SC across.  FO and weave ends.

3.  Now from the corner you will work up approximately 11" with *Ch8, sl st into first ch, then sl st into next st,* repeat from * to *.  Repeat on the other side.

At the top of the hood, I made 6 rows of mane, approximately 5" long.  The space left open between the mane on each side of the hood is for ear placement.  (see pics to help guide you)

Ears (make 2):

Attach ears on each side of hood.

Nose (muzzle):
1.  With light taupe yarn double-stranded, leave a long tail to start with.  Ch8.  SC in 2nd ch and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (7)
2-7- SC across.  At the end of row 7, FO taupe yarn and join burnt pumpkin.  Ch1 and turn.  (7)
8.  With burnt pumpkin, SC across.  Ch1 and turn.  (7)
9.  SC2tog, SC in next 3 st, SC2tog.  Ch1 and turn.  (5)
10.  SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (5)
11.  SC2tog, SC in next st, SC2tog.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)
12.  SC across.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)

(27 SC stitches = 13 sc on each side and 1 at the point of row 13)
15-17.  SC around.  Ch1 and turn.  At the end of 17, FO and leave a long tail.  Stuff firmly as you sew to the center front of the hood.  (27)

Eyes (make 2):

5mm hook
1.  With 5mm hook and black yarn, 3 SC into MR.  Sl st to join and ch1.  (3)
2.  2 SC in each st around.  FO black yarn and join burnt pumpkin.  Sl st to join and ch1.  (6)
3.  With burnt pumpkin, 2 SC in each st around.  FO burnt pumpkin and join yellow.  Sl st to join and ch1.  (12)
4.  With yellow, 2 SC in same st as ch1 and 2 SC in each of the next 6 st, don't FO yellow but leave alone.  Join black yarn before completing the last SC (of the 7th st).  With black yarn, 1 SC st in each of the next 5 st.  Sl st to the first st.  Ch1 and turn.  (19)
5.  Continuing with black yarn, 1 SC in each of the 5 previous row black st.  Before completing last st, join yellow yarn back and 1 SC in each of the previous row yellow st (14).  Sl st to join and FO yellow and black yarn.  Weave ends.  (19)
6.  Join light taupe in any st and ch1.  SC around.  Sl st to join and ch1.  (19)
7.  SC around.  Sl st to join and FO.  Leave a long tail for attaching.  I embroidered white onto the black portion of the inner section of the eye.  Stuff firmly as you sew each eye onto the hood.  (see pics)

Paws (make 2):
8mm hook
From Row 15, measure down 8".
1.  Working with burnt pumpkin and double-stranded yarn, sl st to join and ch1.  SC in same st and next 8.  Ch1 and turn.  (9)
2-20.  SC across.  Ch1 and turn.  FO, leave a long tail for sewing.  Fold paws in half and sew each side; make sure the opening is on the inside so when the blanket is worn standing, child can place their hands into the paws.  I made 3 spots for each paw.  With buttercup yarn, I made 5 SC into MR.  Join and FO.  Then attached to top of the paws.

The completed Lion Blanket from top of hood to the bottom measures 43 1/2" long.

To make into a pillow:  lay blanket out straight, fold from bottom up halfway, then fold inward each side (to mirror the hood) and then fold up under the hood.  Here, is where I noticed the biggest difference in the blanket yarn and using worsted weight yarn.  With the worsted weight yarn, the pillow isn't as firm; is more slouchy, but it still works and can sit on your bed or couch.

How cute is this Fox Gift Card Holder?  I was thinking of my daddy-in-law with Father's Day coming up and he doesn't play golf (i.e...the Woodland Animals Golf Club Covers I made a few days ago) -- so I thought, well, I will make my Woodland Animals into Gift Card Holders...lol!!!

Days Of Creation Play Book...

Well, I finished my Days of Creation Play Book this afternoon.  Yay!!!  I'm sure my grand babies are going to enjoy playing with it plus it's a simple visual aid to actually teach the 7 Days of Creation....

This was a great stash buster project -- not too much of any one color!!!!  I designed all of the appliqués that were used, even my own letters and numbers.  This was a little time consuming for me since I was designing each pattern - some portions were taken apart multiple times before I was finally happy with the end result.  Plus, I was trying to keep each pattern in the easiest explanation format so that even a beginner could tackle and complete.

Color choices are optional -- use what you have!!!  I used a mixture of "I Love This Yarn" from Hobby Lobby and Redheart Supersaver.  So, I just had to watch my gauge and made sure everything sized up correctly.  I used multiple hook sizes in this project.  I tried to create a "split screen" on several of the pages so I had to adjust my hooks to make some of the appliqués smaller to fit.

The finished book measures approximately 9" x 9". So, it's a nice, big size for those little hands...lol.

Days of Creation Pattern

Difficulty Level:  Easy

Materials:
 --Hook sizes 1.75mm (used for the Creation letters on the cover); 6mm (used to make book cover);
5mm (used to make the clasp for the book cover); 5.5mm (used to make the pages and appliques); 4mm (used to make appliques); 4.5mm (used to make the numbers and letters for the pages); 3.5mm (used to make stars)
--#4 worsted weight yarn in your colors of choice (I will specify below in each section the colors I used)
--(1) 1" button for the book cover clasp - I used a black button
--tapestry needle for weaving

Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
St: stitch(es)
Sk:  skip
SC: Single Crochet
HDC:  Half Double Crochet
DC:  Double Crochet
TC:  Triple Crochet
SC2tog:  Single Crochet 2 stitches together
SC3tog:  Single Crochet 3 stitches together
MR: magic ring
FO: fasten off

Special Note:  The book pages are stitched together but the book cover is free standing with a clasp to cover/protect the pages (sorta, like a Bible cover).  So, you can remove the cover and just give the pages to your toddler/child to read and play with!!!

Special Stitch:
Picot Stitch:  ch3 and sl st into first ch
Puff Stitch:  3 DC into same st; however, don't complete the final step of the DC in the first 2.  On the third DC is when you will complete the stitch.

7 Days of Creation!!!!

Well, here's all 7 "pages" of my Days of Creation.  Now, I just need to finish the cover and then I will bind into a book.  I think it turned out super cute.

I will share the pattern and all details once I'm completed -- hopefully, this weekend!!!

----------------
Inspiration & ideas spring to life at the oddest times.  This past Sunday while hubby was preaching at church, Days of Creation, play book idea for toddlers popped into my head.  I kept trying to focus on the Word, but the idea was just stuck there.  So, I came home and started an outline of what I wanted to make...I have 2 toddler grandsons so I'm sure they will enjoy this gem.

Here's a look at my progress thus far!!!

When I get this completed, I will share the FREE pattern with you all.  What better way to teach a child about the 7 Days of Creation than with a picture book?

3 pages to go and then the book cover and I will put this together in a super cute, fun and colorful way that's sure to please toddlers and kids alike.

So, I hope y'all will check back for the completed book in the days ahead....

Happy Crocheting!!!

Golf Club Covers - Woodland Animals...

I've had Father's Day on my mind for the past few days, thinking about what to make my hubby and two sons.  (I lost my dad to cancer in 1998...).  I wanted something cute and functional.

So, I thought I would make Golf Club Covers in the Woodland Animals (like my Messy Bun Hats) - the Fox covers a Driver; and the Wolf and Owl will cover all others.  I think the trio turned out super cute.  I hope you all will enjoy these as much as I did in designing them.  These covers not only make a great Father's Day gift, but would also make a super nice Birthday or Christmas gift.

I'd love to know your thoughts on this trio.

Old Lampshade With A New Look...

Recycling is always good.  And, I'm not one to throw something out if I think there's still potential in it.  So, this lampshade really took a beating in my sunroom from the grand babies.

I'm providing the basic directions in what I did,  I didn't keep an exact stitch count after my 2 rows of HHDC stitches.  But, you will get the general idea of how this look was achieved.

Basic Directions:
1.  I decided to use cotton yarn (I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby) and a 5.5mm hook.
2.  My shade is 27" round and 8" in length,  So, I started with a chain 100 and slip stitched into the first chain to form a ring.
3.  I made 2 rows of HHDC stitches around.  If you want, you can just you HDC (half double crochet) stitches. (Slip stitch to join and Ch1 at the start of each round)
4.  For the remainder, I worked mesh stitches around and continued with rounds until I had my desired length.  Into the first st, *ch4, then skip 3 st and slip stitch into the next* repeat around.  Sl st to first st.
5.  Once finished, I added a variety of black decorative beads around the bottom, evenly spread out.  I did place craft glue around the top portion of shade - where the HHDC rows were...Then, I glued some star beads around the top.

And, that's it!!!!  Old becomes new...
