Farm Animals Softies

   I have really enjoyed making all of the different types of SOFTIES!!!  I now have completed the Woodland-themed, Zoo-themed, Christmas-themed, Fall-themed AND, now, here's the Farm Animals-themed Softies!!!  These are super quick to make, cute and require very little yarn.  So many options to use these:  as a toy, ornaments on a tree/wreath, make a mobile for a nursery, make a keyring, attach/hang them anywhere and everywhere...        
                                    Farm Animals Softies

Difficulty Level:  Easy

Size:  approximately 3" x 3"

Materials:
--2.0mm and 4.0mm hooks
--#4 worsted weight yarn
--approx 2 yds of Red Heart Buttercup yarn (for the sheep's hair)
--animal eyes (optional) - you can make crochet eyes
--tapestry needle for weaving
--polyfil (very small amount for each Softie

Stitch Abbreviations:

Ch:  chain

Sl st:  slip stitch

St:  stitch(es)

SC:  single crochet
SC2tog:  single crochet 2 stitches together
SC3tog:  single crochet 3 stitches together 
HDC:  half double crochet

MR:  magic ring

FO:  fasten off

Below, you will find specific directions in making the additional features to create each farm animal.

                                   Farm Animals Softies

A.  Horse:   
(Brown, pale yellow, light tan/beige yarn)                   

Ears (make 2):
1.  With light tan/beige yarn and 2.0mm hook, Ch5.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (4)
2.  SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (4)
3.  SC2tog, SC in next 2 st.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)
4.  SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)
5.  SC3tog.  FO, weave ends and join brown yarn.  (1)
6.  SC in each st around.  FO, leaving a long enough tail for attaching.

Mouth Area:
1.  With light tan/beige yarn and 2.0mm hook, Ch4.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and next st.  3 SC in last st.  Rotate to work on opposite side of base chain.  SC in next st.  2 SC in last st.  Sl st to first st to join and Ch1.  (8)
2.  SC in the first 3 st.  3 SC in the next st.  SC in the next 3 st.  2 SC in the last st.  Sl st to first st to join and Ch1.  (11)
3.  SC in the first 4 st.  3 SC in the next st.  SC in the next 5 st.  2 SC in the last st.  Sl st to first st to join and FO.  Leave long enough tail for attaching.  (14)

Before attaching, using dark brown yarn to embroider the nostrils and black yarn to embroider the mouth.

Nose stripe:
1.  With light tan/beige yarn and 2.0mm hook, Ch7.  HDC in the 2nd ch from hook and the next 2 ch.  SC in each of the 3 remaining chains.  FO.  Leave tail for attaching.

I attached the HDC end of stripe at the top.

Eyes:
I used animal eyes.  You can crochet 2 eyes.

Hair:
Weave strands of pale yellow yarn at the center top and on the one side; double-knot.

Hanger:
With main color, I joined yarn in the top center back.  Ch10.  Sl st 1-2 stitches over on the main Softie to form a ring.  Weave ends.

B.  Cow:   
(white, pink, black and yellow yarn)                      

Ears (make 2; 1 with white yarn; the other with black yarn):
1.  With 4.0mm hook, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
2.  2 SC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (12)
3-4.  SC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  At the end of Round 4, don't Ch1.  FO, leaving a long enough tail for attaching.  (12)

Horns (make 2):
1. With 2.0mm hook and yellow yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
2-4.  SC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  At the end of Round 4, don't Ch1.  FO, leaving a long enough tail for attaching.  (6)

Nose:
1.  With 4.0mm hook and pink yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
2.  2 SC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (12)
3.  SC in each st around.  Sl st join and FO, leaving a long enough tail for attaching.  (12)

Nostrils:
With black yarn embroider nostrils before attaching nose to Softie.  When you attach the nose, add a small amount of polyfil before closing it up.

Eyes:
I used animal eyes.  You can crochet 2 eyes.

Hanger:
With main color, I joined yarn in the top center back.  Ch10.  Sl st 1-2 stitches over on the main Softie to form a ring.  Weave ends.

C.  Pig:
(pink yarn)

Ears (make 2):
1.  With 2.0mm hook and pink yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
2.  SC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
3.  SC2tog, SC next st.  Repeat around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (4)
4.  SC in each st around.  Sl st join and FO.  Leave tail for attaching.  (4)

Snout:
1.  With 4.0mm hook and pink yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
2.  2 SC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (12)
3.  SC in each st around.  Sl st join and FO, leaving a long enough tail for attaching.  (12)

Eyes:
I used animal eyes.  You can crochet 2 eyes.

Hanger:
With main color, I joined yarn in the top center back.  Ch10.  Sl st 1-2 stitches over on the main Softie to form a ring.  Weave ends.

D.  Sheep:
(white and pink worsted weight yarn; small amount of white Red Heart Buttercup yarn)

Ears (make 2):
1.  With 2.0mm hook and pink yarn, Ch4.  SC in 2nd Ch from hook and next st.  3 SC in the last st.  Rotate.  SC in the next st.  2 SC in the last st.  Sl st join and FO pink yarn.  (8)
2.  Join white yarn and Ch1.  SC around.  Sl st join and FO.  Leave tail for attaching.  (8)

Hair:
1.  With 4.0mm hook and Buttercup yarn, Ch7.  HDC in the 2nd Ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (6)
2.  HDC in each st across.  FO.  Leave tail for attaching.  (6)

Eyes, Nose and Mouth:
1.  With pink yarn embroider eyes, nose and mouth.  (see pics for help)

Hanger:
With main color, I joined yarn in the top center back.  Ch10.  Sl st 1-2 stitches over on the main Softie to form a ring.  Weave ends.


E.  Chick:
(yellow and orange yarn)

Beak:
1.  With 2.0mm hook and orange yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)
2.  2 SC in first st, SC in next 5 st.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (7)
3.  2 SC in first st, SC in next 6 st.  Sl st join and FO.  Leave tail for attaching.  (8)

Eyes:
I used animal eyes.  You can crochet 2 eyes.

Hair:
Weave strands of yellow yarn at the center top and double-knot.  Use tapestry needle to fray.


Hanger:
With main color, I joined yarn in the top center back.  Ch10.  Sl st 1-2 stitches over on the main Softie to form a ring.  Weave ends.
