Zoo Animal Softies....

Here's another variation to my Fox Softie/Keyring - Zoo Animals Softies!!!  Here's what I've made so far:  lion, tiger, zebra, rhino, giraffe, polar bear and elephant. I will post the facial and head features soon.

Like the other Softies I've made so far, I think these are super cute, too. They are quick to make and require very little yarn.

Zoo Animal Softies

Zoo Animal Softies Pattern

Difficulty Level:  Easy

Size:  Approx 3" x 3"

Materials:

--2.0mm, 3.0mm & 4.0mm hook

--#4 worsted weight yarn in black, white, gray, light beige, gold, brown (I used Red Heart, I Love This Yarn and Lion Brand -- just yarn I have at the house)

--buttons/animal eyes (optional)

--very small amount of polyfil (I mean very little, unless you want yours to be round/puffy - mine are less than 1/2" in width)

--tapestry needle for weaving

Stitch Abbreviations:

Ch:  chain

Sl st:  slip stitch

St:  stitch(es)

SC:  single crochet

MR:  magic ring

FO:  fasten off

Fox Softie/Keyring Pattern 

Below, you will find specific directions in making the additional features to create each zoo animal.

A.  Lion:

(Gold,black and brown tweed yarn)

Ears (make 2):

1. With 4.0mm hook and gold yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join.  FO and leave tail for attaching.  (6)

Nose:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and black yarn, Ch2.  SC in 2nd ch from hook.  Ch1 and turn.  (1)

2.  2 SC in st.  FO and leave tail for attaching.  (2)

Mane:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and Brown Tweed yarn,  join yarn at center bottom.  Ch5 and sl st into the 2nd ch from hook and remaining 3 ch.  You will be repeating this around the perimeter of your softie to create the mane.  Note, however, between the ears, I used a Ch3 and sl st 2 times.  

For the mouth and eyes:

I used black yarn and embroidered.

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.

B.  Tiger:

(Gold, black, white and beige yarn)

 Ears (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and beige yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Pull to tighten but do not join.  FO.  Weave ends.  (6)

2.  Join Gold yarn and Ch1.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next.  Repeat across.  FO and leave tail for attaching.  (9)

Nose:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and white yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join.  Ch1.  (6)

2.  2 SC in each st around.  Sl st join.  Ch1.  (12)

3.  1 SC in each st around.  Sl st to join and FO, leaving a tail for attaching.  (12)

Nose Tip/Mouth:

I embroidered with black yarn.  See pics.

Eyes and Stripes:

I embroidered with black yarn.  

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.

C.  Polar Bear:

(White and black yarn)

Ears (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and white yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)

2.  2 SC in each st around.  Sl st join and FO, leaving a tail for attaching. (12) 

Nose:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and white yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (6)

2.  2 SC in 1st st, 1 SC in next st.  Repeat around.  Sl st join and FO, leaving a tail for attaching. (9) 

Nose Tip:

1.  With 2.0mm hook and black yarn, Ch2.  1 SC in 2nd ch from hook.  Ch1 and turn.  (1)

2.  2 SC in st.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching.  (2) 

Eyes:

1.  I used black yarn and embroidered.  

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.

D.  Rhino:

(Gray and white yarn)

 

Ears (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and gray yarn, join yarn on each side of head.  Ch5.  Sl st into first ch to create a picot stitch.  FO and weave ends.  Repeat on other side.

Nose:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and gray yarn, Ch5.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch.  3 SC into the last ch.  Rotate to work on opposite side of base chain.  1 SC in next 2 ch.  2 SC in the last ch.  Sl st to first st and Ch1. (10) 

2.  1 SC in the first 4 st.  3 SC in the next st.  1 SC in the next 4 st.  2 SC in the last st.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (13)

3.  1 SC in the first 5 st.  3 SC in the next st.  1 SC in the next 6 st.  2 SC in the last st.  Sl st join and Ch1. (16) 

4.  1 SC in the first 6 st.  3 SC in the next. 1 SC in the next 8 st.  2 SC in the last.  Sl st join and FO, leaving a tail for attaching.  (19) 

5.  Use white yarn and embroider nostrils before attaching nose to the Softie.  See pics for placement.

Eyes:

1.  With white yarn, embroider eyes.

 

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.

E.  Giraffe:

(Gold, brown, beige, black, and red yarn)

 Ears (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and gold yarn, join yarn on each side of head.  Ch5.  Sl st into first ch to create a picot stitch.  FO and weave ends.  Repeat on other side. 

Horns (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and brown yarn,  Ch5.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching.  

Spots (make 2):

1.  With 2.0mm hook and brown yarn, Ch3.  Sl st into first ch.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching.

Nose:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and beige yarn, Ch4.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and next ch.  3 SC in last ch.  Rotate.  1 SC in next st.  2 SC in last st.  Sl st to first st.  Ch1.  (8) 

2.  1 SC in first 3 st.  3 SC in next st.  1 SC in next 3 st.  2 SC in last st.  Sl st join and FO, leaving a tail for attaching.  With brown yarn, embroider nostrils and with red yarn, the mouth, before attaching nose to Softie.  (11) 

Eyes:

Use black yarn to embroider eyes.

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.

F.  Elephant:

(Gray, white, black and red yarn)

Ears (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and white yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Pull to tighten but don't join.  Ch1 and turn.  (6)

2.  2 SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (12)  

3.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st.  Repeat across.  FO and weave ends.  (18)

4.  Join gray yarn and SC across.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching. (18) 

Eyes (make 2):

1.  With 2.0mm hook and black yarn, 4 SC into MR.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching. (4)

2.  Embroider pupils with white yarn.

Tusk:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and gray yarn, Ch11.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and next 8 ch.  4 SC in last ch.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching.  (13) 

Mouth:

1.  With red yarn, embroider mouth.  

Hair:

1.  With gray yarn strands weave between ears.  Use tapestry needle to fray strands.  Add 4-6 strands.  

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.

G.  Zebra:

(Black and white yarn)

For making the Softie:

1-2.  White yarn.

3.  Black yarn

4-6.  White yarn

7-8.  Black yarn

I added animal eyes after round 8.  I added the eyes between rounds 4 and 6.

9.  White yarn

10.  Black yarn

11.  White yarn.  

Hair/Spike:

1.  With 4.0mm hook and black yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and ch1.  (6)

2.  1 SC in each st around.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching to top center.  (6) 

Ears (make 2):

1.  With 4.0mm hook and white yarn, Ch4.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)

2.  1 SC in each st.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)

3.  SC2tog, 1 SC.  FO white yarn.  (2)

4.  Join black yarn and SC around perimeter of ear.  FO, leaving a tail for attaching.

Hanger:

1.  Join yarn in the back, top center and Ch10.  Sl st to join and FO.  Weave ends.
