Owl Garden Flag

I made this custom order Owl Garden Flag upon request from a customer. I hope she will love it as much as I do.

I used Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn and a 10 hook.

Owl Garden Flag

Owl Garden Flag Pattern 

Difficulty Level:  Easy 

Size:  14" x 16"

Gauge:  7 HDC stitches x 6 rows = 4" 

Materials:

--6mm, 8mm and 10mm hooks 

--Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn in Natural, Glowing Gold, Dark Taupe, Soft Taupe and Pumpkin Spice

--#6 Chunky Yarn in red and green ( for the nose, feet and leaves) 

--#4 worsted weight yarn in black, white and aqua (for the eyes) 

--tapestry needle for weaving

U.S. Stitch Abbreviations:

Ch:  chain

Sl st:  slip stitch

St:  stitch(es)

SC:  single crochet

HDC:  half double crochet

DC:  double crochet 

MR:  magic ring

FO:  fasten off 

Directions:

Flag:

1.  With 10mm hook and Natural yarn, Ch23.  HDC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (22)

2- 20.  1 HDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  At the end of Row 20, FO and weave ends.  (22)

21.  Join Glowing Gold yarn in any stitch and Ch1.  HDC in same st and around perimeter with 3 HDC st in each corner.  Sl st join to first st and FO.  Weave ends

22.  Join Dark Taupe and repeat #21.  FO and weave ends.

Tabs (make 3):

1.  With 10mm hook and Dark Taupe yarn, Ch5.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (4)

2-14.  1 SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  At the end of Round 14, FO and leave a long tail for attaching.  (4)

Owl Appliqué:

1.  With 6mm hook and Pumpkin yarn, 10 HDC into MR.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (10)

2.  2 HDC in each st around.  Sl st join and Ch1.  (20)

3.  2 HDC in first st, 1 HDC in next st.  Repeat around.  Sl st join and FO.  Weave ends.  (30)

Wings and ears:

4.  Join Soft Taupe yarn in any st and Ch1.  Into same st as Ch1, SC st.  2 HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, 2 HDC in next st, 2 SC in next st and 1 SC in next 2 st (first wing made).  Into the next st (1 HDC, 1 SC, picot stitch, 1 HDC - first ear made).  1 SC in each of the next 4 st.  Into the next st (1 HDC, 1 SC, picot stitch, 1 HDC - second ear made).  1 SC in each of the next 2 st.  2 SC in next st, 2 HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, 2 HDC in next st and 1 SC in next st (2nd wing made).  1 SC in each of the remaining st.  Sl st to join to first st and FO.  Leave a long tail for attaching.  

Eyes (make 2):

1.  With 6 mm hook and #4 black yarn, 6 SC into MR.  Sl st join and FO.  (6)

2.  Join #4 white yarn in any st and Ch1.  2 SC in each st around.  Sl st join and FO.  (12)

3.  Join #4 aqua yarn in any st and Ch1.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st.  Repeat around.  Sl st join and FO.  Leave long tail for attaching.  (18) 

Nose:

1.  With 6 mm hook and #6 red/cranberry yarn, Ch3.  SC in 2nd ch and next.  Ch1 and turn.  (2)

2.  SC across.  Ch1 and turn.  (2)

3.  SC2tog.  FO.  Leave tail for attaching.  (1)

Feet (make 2):

1.  With 6 mm hook and #6 red/cranberry yarn, I sl st to join at the left side bottom.  Ch3, sl st into 1st ch.  Sl st into same st.  Ch3, sl st into the 1st ch.  Repeat one more time.  FO and weave ends.

2.  Skip over 3 stitches and repeat #1 for the right foot.

Tree Branch:

1.  With 8mm hook and Dark Taupe yarn, Ch31.  SC in 2nd ch from hook.  SC in next 24 ch.  Ch7.  SC in 2nd ch from hook and next 5 ch.  Now, continue to SC in the remaining 5 base chains.  

Large Leaf:

1.  With green yarn and 8mm hook, Ch7.  Sl st in 2nd ch from hook.  SC in next ch.  HDC in next ch.  DC in next 2 ch.  3 DC in last ch.  Rotate to work on base side.  DC in next 2 ch.  HDC in next ch. SC in next ch and sl st in last st.  FO and leave long tail for attaching.

Small Leaf (make 2): 

1.  With green yarn and 8mm hook, Ch6.  Sl st in 2nd ch from hook.  SC in next ch.  HDC in next ch.  DC in next ch.  3 DC in last ch.  Rotate to work on base side.  DC in next ch.  HDC in next ch. SC in next ch and sl st in last st.  FO and leave long tail for attaching.
