Fox Pencil Case....

While browsing at school supplies today, I got to thinking about this cute, quick and easy project - a Fox Pencil Case.  This could also be used as a Crochet Hook Case or, if vacationing, a Toothbrush Case...lol.  Change yarn colors to gray, white and black to make this case into a wolf!!!

Fox Pencil Case

Difficulty Level:  Easy

Size:  3 1/2" x 8"

Gauge:  7 HHDC stitches X 6 rows = 2"

Materials:
--4mm hook
--#4 worsted weight yarn (80-100 yds)
--3 small black buttons
--1 Sew-on snap button set

Stitch Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
St: stitch(es)
SC: single crochet
HHDC: Herringbone Half Double crochet
HHDC2tog: Herringbone Half Double crochet 2 stitches together
FO: fasten off

Directions:
Front Piece:
1.  With Terra Cotta, Ch14.  HHDC in 2nd st from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (13)
2-24.  1 HHDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  At the end of Row 24, FO and weave ends.

Back Piece:
1.  With Terra Cotta, Ch14.  HHDC in 2nd st from hook and across.  Ch1 and turn.  (13)
2-30.  1 HHDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  At the end of Row 30, FO yarn and join with white yarn.
31-32.  1 HHDC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (13)
33.  HHDC2tog, 1 HHDC in next 9 st, HHDC2tog.  Ch1 and turn.  (11)
34.  HHDC2tog, 1 HHDC in next 7 st, HHDC2tog.  Ch1 and turn.  (9)
35.  HHDC2tog, 1 HHDC in next 5 st, HHDC2tog.  Ch1 and turn.  (7)

Nose:
1.  With Terra Cotta, Ch2.  1 SC in 2nd ch from hook.  Ch1 and turn.  (1)
2.  2 SC in st.  Ch1 and turn.  (2)
3. 2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)
4.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st and 2 SC in last st.  Ch1 and turn.  (5)
5.  1 SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (5)
6.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next 3 st and 2 SC in last st.  Ch1 and turn.  (7)
7.  1 SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (7)
8.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next 5 st and 2 SC in last st.  Ch1 and turn.  (9)
9.  1 SC in each st across.  FO, leaving a long tail to attach.  (9)

Sew a black button to nose tip.

Ears (make 2):
1.  With black yarn, Ch2.  1 SC in 2nd ch from hook.  Ch1 and turn.  (1)
2.  2 SC in st.  Ch1 and turn.  (2)
3.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st.  Before completing last stitch, FO black yarn and join Terra Cotta yarn.  Ch1 and turn. (3)
4.  1 SC in each st across.  Ch1 and turn.  (3)
5.  2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st, 2 SC in last st.  Ch1 and turn.  (5)
6.  1 SC in each st across.  FO and weave ends.  Join white yarn in any st and SC around perimeter of ear.  FO, leaving a long tail for attaching.

Assembly:  See pics for ear, nose and eye placement.  I then whipstitched down the side, across the bottom and up the other side.  Weaved ends.   For the sew-on snap, I placed it on the backside (under the nose).  I then aligned the second snap to the center front.  

A Pencil Case?  A Hook Case?  A Toothbrush Case?  What else do you think it could be used for?  And, don't forget you can use gray, white and black yarn and make this into a Wolf Case....
