If you haven't noticed yet, I have been in a red, white and blue inspiration mode lately...lol. Good thing is: colors aren't just for Fourth of July but can be used all summer for your decor.....
I hope you all enjoy this pattern as much as I did in designing it.
Patriotic/Summer Mobile....
Patriotic/Summer Mobile Pattern
Difficulty Level: Easy
Materials:
--5mm hook and a 2.5mm hook
--inner portion of an 8" circular hoop (I bought a wood one from Hobby Lobby)
--#4 worsted weight yarn in red, white and blue (I used "I Love This Yarn" from Hobby Lobby)
--9 small bells
--small plastic ring for hanging
--polyfil
--tapestry needle for weaving
Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
St: stitch(es)
MR: magic ring
FO: fasten off
SC: single crochet
HDC: half double crochet
BLO: back loops only
Directions:
1. Join red yarn to hoop with a sl st and Ch1. SC around the hoop. I made 140 SC stitches. Sl st to first st. Do not fasten off.
Now, you will make the 3 hangers.
2. Make a Ch30. Leave a long tail and FO.
3. Count over and join yarn in stitch 46. Ch30. Leave a long tail and FO.
4. And, again, count over and join yarn in stitch 46. Ch30. Leave a long tail and FO.
Join the 3 tails together, and tie a double knot at the last ch made. I wanted about a 4" gap from the double knot to where I attached the plastic ring for the hanger, but you can do this part as long or as short as you want it.
Stars:
I made 3 stars of each color (1 large and 2 small). This means, I had to make 4 small of each color and 2 large of each color since I wanted mine to be puffy by joining 2 stars together and adding the polyfil. Now, if you don't want puffy stars, then adjust accordingly.
To make the stars:
Small:
1. With 5mm hook and yarn, 15sc into MR. Sl st to first st. Pull tail to tighten/close opening. Sl st into next st. *Ch2. Into same st, make 2 sc st and then ch3 and sl st into first ch (picot stitch made), add 3 more sc st into same st. Sl st into next 3 st.* Into the last st you made a sl st, repeat from * to *. Repeat 3 more times until you have a 5-point star made. Sl st into first st and FO. Leave a long tail for assembly.
Large:
To make the large stars, follow the instructions for the small. The only difference is that you replace the SC stitches with HDC stitches.
Assembly of stars:
I joined coordinating yarn with a sl st to the hoop and made a ch8. Then I sl st to join the small star at one of the points to the ch. I then FO and weaved ends. I then joined yarn with a sl st at the opposite end point of the star and made a ch15, then Sl st to join the large star at one of the points. FO and weave ends. Then, join yarn with a sl st to the opposite end point of the star. Now, ch15 again and sl st to join the last small star at one of the points. FO and weave ends. Repeat this process 2 more times for the other 2 colors. I just evenly spread around where I attached my yarn on the hoop. Now, you can mix and match your stars if you so choose. I think it would look really pretty like that as well.
Curlicues:
I made 1 of each color. For this part, I decided to use a 2.5mm hook. I didn't want my curlicues to be too bulky. But, you can use whatever size hook you have available.
1. I made a ch75. Into the 2nd ch from the hook and across, I added 3 sc stitches per chain. FO. Leave a long enough tail to attach 2 bells to each one and then join to the hoop and weave ends.
I just evenly sl st to the hoop and FO.
USA Bell:
1. With 5mm hook and white yarn, 6 sc into MR. Sl st to join and Ch1. (6)
2. 2 sc in each st around. Sl st to join and Ch1. (12)
3. 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st. Repeat around. Sl st to join and Ch1. (18)
4-6. 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to join and Ch1. (18)
7. 1 HDC in each st around. Sl st to join and Ch1. (18)
8. 1 sc in BLO of each st around. Sl st to join and Ch1. (18)
9. 2 sc in BLO of each st around. Sl st to join and Ch1. (36)
10. 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to join and FO. Weave ends. (36)
To add bells and make a hoop:
I used white yarn and added 3 bells to the center of the yarn. Tied double knot. I then used my tapestry needle to weave ends up through top of bell to make a hoop/hanger since I only wanted my bell draped over where I joined the 3 hangers. (See pic)
The letters USA:
I just used my tapestry needle and red yarn and embroidered the letters on.
I made 3 smaller curlicues (1 of each color) for the top of my bell. On these 3, I did use the 5mm hook and started with a ch19. And, then 3 sc stitches into the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Leave a long enough tail to attach to top and weave ends.
And, that's it!!! A cute, summery mobile for your home decor...
Happy Crocheting!!!
